Vaginitis may be caused by several different reasons, each one having its own symptoms. Intense itching in the vagina or vulva is the most common complaint. Vaginal discharge is also common. The discharge may be thick or even cottage cheese-like or it may be the opposite and be very watery. The color of the vaginal discharge may vary from white to grayish or yellow. Differences in the thickness of discharge or the color may help identify the type of infection present. The discharge may also have a fishy odor. Vaginitis that may occur as women produce less estrogen is called atrophic vaginitis. This usually happens as fluids that normally lubricate the vagina decrease. Symptoms include vaginal itching, sometimes-painful intercourse, or even bleeding.
