| Studies indicate that cyclo (his-pro) is an important new agent that can help improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Cyclo (his-pro) is a naturally occurring cyclic dipeptide and has been found in the blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), semen, brain, spinal cord, and in the digestive tract of humans.(1) It has been determined that cyclo (his-pro) has several different activities within the body and the greatest concentration of this substance has been found to occur in the prostate gland.(2)
Currently the source of cyclo (his-pro) in dietary supplements is powdered animal prostate, which contains approximately 1% cyclo (his-pro). It has been determined that some common foods contain cyclo (his-pro) after they have been processed and packaged. These foods include dried shrimp, fish sauce, tuna, ham, potted meat, non-dairy creamer, white bread, and noodles.(3) Also due to processing techniques, products such as Ensure, Ensure-Plus, Osmolite, and other products that contain casein and/or soy contain cyclo (his-pro).(4)

Numerous trials have used powdered prostate gland or extracts from the prostate glands of various animals to study the effects of cyclo (his-pro). These studies suggest that cyclo (his-pro) is one of the compounds in the prostate gland that helps control the absorption of zinc from the digestive tract.(5) Zinc plays a key role in production, storage, and release of insulin(6) and is also required for proper use of blood sugar by muscle and fat cells.(7) This activity results in a significant decline in both blood sugar levels and urine sugar (glucose) levels in diabetic patients.(8) In fact, results from animal studies and clinical trials in patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes (type 2) indicate that cyclo (his-pro) helps improve the symptoms associated with diabetes.(5, 9)

Pregnancy/Breast-Feeding
To date, the medical literature has not reported any adverse effects related to fetal development during pregnancy or to infants who are breast-fed. Yet little is known about the use of this dietary supplement while pregnant or breast-feeding. Therefore, it is recommended that you inform your healthcare practitioner of any dietary supplements you are using while pregnant or breast-feeding. |
Age Limitations
To date, the medical literature has not reported any adverse effects specifically related to the use of this dietary supplement in children. Since young children may have undiagnosed allergies or medical conditions, this dietary supplement should not be used in children under 10 years of age unless recommended by a physician. |
